Modern art at the Louis Vuitton Foundation

Catch a special event at the Louis Vuitton Foundation from October 22nd to February 20th 2017. The exhibition will feature 130 paintings and sculptures by Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Manet, Malevich and many other notable painters from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Chtchoukine collection is partially reconstructed for the first time in France: a challenge, a miracle and a treat for the senses!
Philanthropist and visionary
Born in 1854 into a wealthy family of ship owners, industrialist Serguei Chtchoukine became one of the greatest art enthusiasts of his time and a patron of the Impressionist period painters. Between 1898 and the beginning of the First World War, he purchased almost 280 paintings, including 16 by Gauguin, 38 by Matisse (to whom he also entrusted the decoration of his home in Moscow where Matisse painted the famous ‘Dance’, a work that would cause quite a scandal in 1910), and 50 by Picasso Manet, Van Gogh and Monet. He covered the walls of his Moscow mansion with them before deciding to open it to the public and creating, for the first time, a museum of modern and contemporary art. Following nationalisation in 1914, the collection became unavailable to the public and Chtchoukine was forced into exile in Paris where he died in 1936.
A partnership between leading French and Russian museums
The Chtchoukine collection is now divided between the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow – and for the first time, part of it is on French soil. Luckily, this exceptional exhibition isn’t far from the Hotel Sezz Paris! It’s your chance to joyfully (re) discover Picasso’s Three Women, Cezanne’s Man with a Pipe, Thatched Cottages at Auvers-sur-Oise by Van Gogh or the languorous Aha oe Feii by Paul Gauguin before exploring works by Malevich, Rodchenko, Tatlin or Popova or Larionov. Enjoy a unique French and Russian collaboration in a magnificent contemporary setting.
